Considering a Care Home

Deciding on a care home is a big step. This page helps you understand what care homes are, when they might be needed, and where to start.

As we grow older, our needs can change. Sometimes, living at home may no longer feel safe or manageable — even with support. For some, moving into a care home is the right choice to stay safe, comfortable, and well looked after.

It’s not always an easy decision, but the more informed you are, the easier it becomes to take the next step with confidence.

On this page, you’ll find:

  • What a care home is and what support it offers
  • When to consider moving into a care home
  • How to start the conversation with your family or GP
  • Links to helpful organisations and advice

What is a care home?

A care home provides accommodation, meals, and personal care for people who may need help with everyday tasks such as washing, dressing, taking medication, or moving around safely.

Some care homes also offer nursing care from registered nurses and support for specific conditions such as dementia.

Care homes can be:

  • Residential care homes: offering personal care and social activities
  • Nursing homes: offering more complex health support and 24/7 nursing care
  • Specialist homes: comfortable and safe living for people with dementia feel

When might a care home be needed?

Everyone’s situation is different, but people often start thinking about care homes when:

  • They feel unsafe or anxious living alone
  • Falls, memory problems, or long-term conditions make everyday life difficult
  • Family or carers are finding it hard to provide the level of care needed
  • Recovery after hospital is proving more challenging

If you or someone you care for is struggling at home, the first step is to talk to your GP or local adult social care team about a care needs assessment or visit the NHS website to find out more about how to get a care needs assessment.

How to start the conversation

Talking about care homes can be emotional - for you, your family, and loved ones. It may take time, but planning ahead helps everyone feel more prepared and involved.

Some tips:

  • Start the conversation early if possible
  • Talk openly about concerns, needs and wishes
  • Focus on safety, comfort and quality of life
  • Explore options together — you don’t have to make a decision straight away

Next Steps

If you’re unsure what support is available, you’re not alone. Help is available through your GP, local authority, or social services team.
